Weekly Roundup: Stuck in Maintenance Mode

Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.

That was the message WordPress was giving me. I had done something stupid. I was impatient and navigated away from the update page while it was working.

I didn’t panic. I was sure I was not the first person using WordPress to have this problem so I did what every programmer worth their salt does and Googled the issue. So to help other people here is the solution since it won’t resolve itself without a little help.

  1. Fire up your FTP program or SSH to your WordPress server.
  2. Go to the root of the WordPress site.
  3. Locate a file called “.maintenance”.
  4. Delete the file.

Easy solution. If FTP or SSH is not in your bag of tricks just email me at john@panolatech.com.
